Celebrating 21 years!!

21st Birthday BBQ!

Outside Sports NZ

21 Years as your Local Outdoor and Adventure Store.

John and Judy Knight moved to Queenstown in 1995 to open up an outdoor store that would give them a reason to live and play in paradise! Along with good friend Craig Wanty they opened the store with the vision to service the growing population of outdoor enthusiasts that were visiting or living in Queenstown and to help build the outdoor industry in the area.

Outside Sports was born!

The first shop opened at the top of the Mall (where Starbucks is now) in October 1995 and quickly became the top outdoor sport and adventure store in Queenstown.

From the start, Outside Sports was an official Icebreaker Merino seller and one of Icebreakers first outlets. Now stocking Icebreakers complete range, Outside Sports is one of their largest outlets in New Zealand. Along with Icebreaker, Outside Sports stocks a wide range of high quality outdoor sporting and adventure gear suited to the activities and environment in the Southern lakes area. Outside Sports carefully chooses its brands to be of high quality that its owners and staff are proud to use, wear and sell.

Outside Sports NZ 1995 Queenstown

Outside Sports was opened in 1995 at the top of the Queenstown Mall.

Outside Sports as a store went from strength to strength and eventually the site was too small so in 2004 they moved to a brand new 3 story building in lower Shotover Street. A couple of years later Fergburger saw the light and moved in next door as well. In 2009, Good Sports Wanaka and Te Anau Sports were merged with and became the next two Outside Sports branches. These merges has made Outside Sports the outdoor stores of the Southern lakes, based in all the key towns, providing the best product for the activities in the area including tramping, biking, skiing, fitness, fashion, fishing and more.

Outside Sports moved in 2004 to 36-37 Shotover Street.

In February 2015 Outside Sports Queenstown moved again just up the road to 9 Shotover St opposite Alpine Supermarket, where it stands today. The new building has provided more room and bonus car parking at the back entrance of the store.

The Outside Sports team share a strong passion for the outdoors and between them have a huge amount of amazing stories from their experience getting out there and doing it themselves.

Outside Sports then moved to 9 Shotover Street in 2015.

Outside Sports is still owned and operated by John and Judy knight making it one of the longest standing local outdoor stores in the Southern Lakes of New Zealand.

Winter is here- FINALLY!

Winter is here!

The El Nino weather pattern gave us a great warm, long summer, and it was always said we would be in for a delayed start to winter, and wasn’t that the truth.

In mid may the South Island had a big snow fall and all was looking good for the season ahead.

Queenstown ski fields opened to schedule and we were stoked to have so many bluebird days, unfortunately a couple of warm weeks later the snow was melting away fast. No storms came through which meant Coronet Peak had to close for a week during winter festival and Treble Cone had to delay their opening day, things we not looking great…..

Eventually we got a couple of weeks where the temperatures dropped allowing some great snow making to be done and the re-opening of Coronet Peak, but still no natural snow.

As of Monday 18th July, Cardrona has a solid base of 45cm at the base building and 65 at the summit, Treble Cone has a base of 85cm at the base building and 120 at the summit, Remarkables has 40cm at the base building and 75cm at the summit, Coronet Peak has 20cm at the base and 60cm at the summit.

And the forecast shows there is more on its way this weekend!

If the long term predication is correct it’s looking like we could be in for a long, late winter so get prepared for some great skiing all season long!
