South Island Champs

South Island Champs

By Reuben;

Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of July I raced in Christchurch at the South Island secondary schools championships. I was racing an individual time trial and a road race. The time trial was 3.4 km on a dead flat course at Ruapuna motorsport park. I went better than I expected for an off season race coming away with bronze.

Sunday was the road race. All started well with two other boys and I breaking away around 7 km into the 20 km race. We got our gap out to 24 seconds on the main bunch then......

"with 5 km to go I noticed I had a flat tyre".

I worked on the front as hard as I could trying to stay ahead of the main and to stay on when the other boys attacked. When the other two sprinted for the line there was no way I could match their pace but made it home for a second bronze of the weekend. I made it to the finish with the bunch only 25-50 metres back.

My wheel has some minor scrapes but otherwise it was well worth pushing on with the flat tyre although a bit gutted to have had a flat in the first place, especially when that is the first ever one I've had other than slow leaks on a road bike.

We have since been staying at the Spencerville holiday park where I have been playing on the Bottle Lake Forest MTB trails and exploring the roads surrounding Christchurch up the Port Hills. Really stoked to podium at this event as this was my first ever bike race this time last year. Wouldn't believe I have come this far in only twelve months of riding.

Winter is here- FINALLY!

Winter is here!

The El Nino weather pattern gave us a great warm, long summer, and it was always said we would be in for a delayed start to winter, and wasn’t that the truth.

In mid may the South Island had a big snow fall and all was looking good for the season ahead.

Queenstown ski fields opened to schedule and we were stoked to have so many bluebird days, unfortunately a couple of warm weeks later the snow was melting away fast. No storms came through which meant Coronet Peak had to close for a week during winter festival and Treble Cone had to delay their opening day, things we not looking great…..

Eventually we got a couple of weeks where the temperatures dropped allowing some great snow making to be done and the re-opening of Coronet Peak, but still no natural snow.

Over the past week the snow has finally been falling and it looks, and feels like winter is finally here!

As of Monday 18th July, Cardrona has a solid base of 45cm at the base building and 65 at the summit, Treble Cone has a base of 85cm at the base building and 120 at the summit, Remarkables has 40cm at the base building and 75cm at the summit, Coronet Peak has 20cm at the base and 60cm at the summit.

And the forecast shows there is more on its way this weekend!

If the long term predication is correct it’s looking like we could be in for a long, late winter so get prepared for some great skiing all season long!

Harris Mountain Heli-Ski

I went Heli skiing with Harris Mountain!!

Monday 11th July 2016 by Yuki

Up until just recently we haven't seen much snow on the ski fields in Queenstown, the weather has been so mild. The good news is there is still plenty of snow up higher, you just need a helicopter to get there!

(Take off time after some avalanche safety training and helicopter loading).

So I went Heli Skiing with Harris Mountain Heli Ski!!

(First run and I can't quite believe where I am).

The weather was fantastic and the views from the top of our private, untracked mountain were just gorgeous.

Not only were the snow conditions awesome, at lunch they put on a delicious spread of cheeses, meats and hot drinks- on a snow carved table.

This was my first time ever Heli Skiing and I would highly recommend it. Harris Mountain offer various levels of terrain to suit your ability so you don't need to be a world class skier to experience this amazing New Zealand trip. It's great to get away from the crowded ski fields and ski some untracked New Zealand powder.

What I was wearing from Outside Sports:

-Haglofs Spirit Jacket

-Haglofs L.I.M Power Dry Hood

-Icebreaker 200 Oasis Base layer

-Icebreaker 200 Body Fit Zone legless

-Icebreaker Oasis Balaclava

-Icebreaker Sierra Gloves

-Marmot Spring Glove

-Spyder Sport Merino socks

-Smith Optics Maze Helmet

-Dalbello Scorpion Ski Boots

-Rossignol Saffron Ski (Outside Sports Ski Rental)

Achieve a season goal in hours

I'm lucky enough this season to be coached by Jackson Wells.

Today was my first day with him at Cardrona and he asked me on my first ride on the chair what goals I want to accomplish this season.  I told him I wanted to achieve a 270 onto a rail in the big park.  He loved the idea and got me practicing them straight away.

After a couple of attempts in the Mini Park I was confident enough to bring them to the big park.

The trick needs more work but I'm stoked I've achieved a season goal in just a couple of hours.

Cheers to #JacksonWells for a productive day!
