All mountains open down South!

A great start!

It’s been an Epic season for New Zealand’s Southern Alps ski fields so far with weather forecasts seeming to be on track with El Niño.

All of the Ski fields in the Queenstown-Wanaka area are now officially open and they have managed to open all of the terrain thanks to Mother Nature’s snow generosity this year. Queenstown and Wanaka are vibrant ski resort towns in the South Island of New Zealand. Both towns experienced a great Antarctic-fed snow storm late May through to early June 2015. This huge snow fall and cold temperatures provided the perfect environment for the ski fields to get ready for the winter season, providing great all mountain base coverage and lots of snow making opportunities. Since Opening day for all 4 mountains, skiers and snowboarders have been provided with an abundance of clear skies, cold temperatures and lots of powder!

Coronet Peak and Cardrona Alpine Resort were the first ski resorts to open mid June followed by Treble Cone and then The Remarkables this weekend. Improvements and new features are noticeable at all the resorts; from cafe's to open terrain and the biggest being the new base building at The Remarkables.

This week has seen some stunning bluebird days and the snow has held up well for opening days providing plenty of powder at both Treble Cone and The Remarkables. It’s not usual to see so much off piste terrain available to shred this early on in the season. Coronet peak and Cardrona Alpine Resort are still keeping up the grooming and the snow making with these cold temperatures making for epic piste and park skiing and riding.

New for Treble Cone Ski Area, NZ 2015

What's New?

Voted winner of 'New Zealand's Best Ski Resort' at the World Ski Awards for 2 consecutive years in 2013 and 2014, Treble Cone Ski area in Wanaka, New Zealand has announced new developments for winter 2015 including; earthworks for intermediate trails in the Saddle Basin and a new open-air cafe at the top of the Home Basin, serving barista made Allpress coffee and chef cooked-to-order lunches, with spectacular views across the lake and the snow capped Southern Alps. The existing base cafe will also see upgrades with a 'ready-to-go' food court style outlet and a more intimate, table serviced dining experience.

Treble Cone is the south Islands largest ski resort with terrain like no other. The new developments will only improve the already outstanding ski area. Treble Cone has also introduced a Flexi Pass in conjunction with Wanaka’s other amazing ski area, Cardrona Alpine Resort. The Flexi pass can be purchased online or on-mountain at both Treble Cone and Cardrona for a 3 or 5 days lift pass. Meaning skiers can enjoy both mountains on one flexible ticket.

Where are the New Trails?

Earthworks have taken place in the Saddle Basin creating an intermediate groomed trail, located adjacent to Raffills Run creating a wide intermediate run. The Saddle basin is well known for its reliable natural snow and quad chairlift access. Raffills Run will be re-aligned to deliver a new wider and easier entrance off High Street, to replace the previous narrow entrance to this popular trail.

Nearby, Saddle Back will have a new wider and gentler entrance making the previously difficult to locate, advanced trail into a fun, sweeping intermediate run through the heart of the Saddle Basin.

The new intermediate trails which include earthworks and snow fencing to create additional groomed intermediate options in the Saddle Basin, plus the introduction of a new open air mountain top cafe in the Home Basin, deliver the ski area's most exciting developments since the installation of the Saddle Quad Chairlift in 2005" Jackie van der Voort, General Manager.

Other upgrades include: beginner features to the Jazz Park, new Saddle Basin live snow cam, new storage lockers and rental fleet upgrades in the Treble Cone Rentals shop.

Crankworx Rotorua brings together the world’s downhill, slopestyle and enduro legends, with the Superfans, the rising stars, the industry’s innovators and the next generation of mountain bike riders for five days of contests, concerts, culture and cranking. The 2015 Crankworx Rotorua Enduro is round one of the Enduro World Series (EWS) season, marking the start of the professional mountain bike racing calendar. With Enduro being the fastest growing competitive discipline of mountain biking in the world, there is huge demand for the limited 400 spots. The Crankworx Rotorua Enduro is offering equal prize money for men and women with the second biggest cash prize in the series behind Whistler, Canada.

Crankworx Rotorua Enduro race manager Neil Gellatly is proud to hold 20 wildcard spots for Kiwis: “It’s important to have a strong New Zealand presence in this Crankworx Rotorua Enduro race as it’s a sport we want to grow – if these wildcard entries help to propel Kiwi riders onto the world circuit, it will be huge for New Zealand mountain biking.”

Enduro mountain bike racing took off in New Zealand two years ago and has quickly exploded in popularity with more than 40 Enduro events nation-wide in 2014. Enduro is similar to car rallying based on timed downhill runs and untimed uphills. Racing is held over a series of stages and the fastest combined time after those stages wins. However, riders also need to get between stages within a certain time frame. Enduro racing is also renowned for its approach where amateurs race on the same course on the same day as professionals. The Enduro World Series uncovers the world’s best trails and unites the world’s best mountain biking communities – in 2015 it is increasing to eight rounds with five new venues, three new countries and one new continent (NZ). The rounds of EWS will visit (in order): New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, France, America, Canada, Spain, and Italy.

So far placings in EWS rankings have reserved places for nine Kiwis including women in the EWS Top 20: Rosara Joseph, Anka Martin, Gabby Molloy and Meggie Bichard. Kiwi men in the Top 100 EWS rankings are: Justin Leov, Jamie Nicoll, Joseph Nation and James Hampton, plus Kurt Lancaster.

The 20 wildcard spots have been offered to the Top Five Kiwi women riders and Top 10 men from the 2013 – 14 NZ Mountain Bike Crown Enduro Rankings. The women are: Raewyn Morrison, Jenna Makgill, Anja McDonald, Harriet Harper and Sasha Smith. The men are: Matt Walker, Byron Scott, Connor Macfarlane, Hayden Lee, Ed Kerly, Karl Paterson, Reuben Miller, Jimmy Pollard, Ben Robson and Tom Lamb.
