What are Mips bike helmets and how do they work?

You probably recognise the little yellow MIPS dot – but what does it mean and why should you choose a MIPS equipped helmet?  

What is Mips? 

Mips stands for Multi-Impact Protection System. It’s an extra low-friction layer that fits inside the helmet between the hard shell and the lining, which can move 10 – 15mm in any direction when there’s an impact. That ‘give’ helps absorb and reduce the amount of force transmitted to your brain from rotational motion. Usually the Mips layer is bright yellow and you can see parts of it when you look inside a Mips equipped helmet. Mips systems weigh a barely noticeable 25-45 grams, not much more than the weight of a typical energy bar. 

What is rotational motion? 

Most times when you crash and hit your head you fall at an angle and impact the ground or another sort of obstacle with a glancing blow. That angular impact creates a sharp and instantaneous rotational motion, which is transmitted directly to your brain. Studies have shown that the twisting effect that happens inside your skull is more dangerous to your brain than a linear impact, causing more concussions and severe brain injuries. 

Who invented the Mips system? 

Peter Halldin a researcher at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, and Hans von Holst a Neurosurgeon, developed Mips to improve the way helmets protect against rotational impacts. Their innovation revolutionised sports safety and so far has been fitted to over 23 million helmets worldwide.
