GODZone 2015 NZ

GODZone is a 500km multi-day, non-stop, expedition-style adventure race like no other. Teams consist of a mixed format, 4 people containing at least one female. Disciplines are unknown and the location is different every year, testing the mental and physical skill of the participants. Teams have to navigate, trek, mountain bike, kayak and canoe, traversing over a vast array of different terrain, through some of New Zealand’s most stunning landscapes. GodZone is held between the months of February and March. Each year of the GodZone has been named a chapter, begining it’s journey in the previous 3 chapters from Milford Sound, Mount Cook and Kaikoura. Chapter 4 is the next series of the Godzone and will be held in the mountain town of Lake Wanaka, in the South Island of NZ.

GODZone in New Zealand represents the pinnacle of adventure racing challenges, it is the most technically demanding adventure race in the World and individuals who intend to take part in the event should be highly competent, prepared and plan accordingly; The route will be highly demanding both technically and physically. Those taking on GODZone will be expected to travel day and night, with decisions to rest and sleep left solely to the discretion of the teams themselves. It is anticipated that the winning team will take between three and four days to finish. Teams may be allowed to take as many as seven days to complete the course. There will be short course options available to those teams unable to complete the full course in the allotted time.

Specialized Bike Review, Crave SL & Enduro 29

Specialized Bike Review

Tom Lamb Feb. 2015

Tom Lamb, a staff member from our bike department and very experienced rider, puts his view on his own bikes from a couple of recent rides:

My first ride on my new Specialized Crave SL:

My New Specialized Crave SL is challenging but a fantastically fun bike to ride. The fully ridged fork may be a bit too brutal for some (myself included) but it does give the bike a very direct feel with no energy lost compared to suspension travel bike. I changed a few parts on this bike but this is only because I had a bunch of spare parts in the garage. Riding the Specialized Crave SL as it comes straight from the shop is more than ok. The stock brakes are on the cheaper end of the scale but still offer good stopping power and the rest of the componentry offers good solid performing parts that may not be cutting edge but will not let you down while also not weighing a ton. I’m looking forward to riding this bike through the winter as I think it will be fantastic fun – I like getting loose in the wet.

Specialized Enduro 29er up Coronet Peak, Queenstown.

I love this bike!!! it is the most capable bike I have ever had, I have done everything on this from 3hr plus XC rides (the more up the better, it means more down) to racing (and winning) downhill. The Coronet trails are where this bike really excels, big climbs followed by high speed, at times very steep, trails. The traction and stability offered by the big wheels really shine and I cannot help but come away from riding this place in a better mood than when I arrived, I wouldn't swap it for anything else out there just now (apart from an S-Works Enduro 29).

The Motor Neurone Cycle Challenge, NZ 2015

The Motor Neurone Cycle Challenge 2015

In February 2015 Carey Vivian embarked on an inspiring 6 week mission; cycling off-road and unsupported for 4,000 km from Cape Reinga (North Island, New Zealand) to Bluff (South Island, New Zealand) to fundraise for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of New Zealand. This challenging cycle route criss-crosses the country several times and equates to more than two times the distance if the shortest on-road route was taken. The ride will push Carey’s endurance and willpower to the extreme. To complete the challenge route within the 6 week timeframe Carey will need to average at least 100km per day despite possible adverse weather conditions and physical difficulties.

Carey’s father was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease two years ago. Carey decided he needed to do something tangible to help the association, and used his expertise in biking to aid fundraising and awareness. Since the age of 2 Carey has done it all: BMX, road cycling, track cycling, mountain biking, touring, single speed and cyclocross. An elected life member of the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club and a Trustee on Queenstown Trails Trust. Carey’s mission of the Motor Neurone Cycle Challenge is to raise $50,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of NZ and promote public awareness of Motor Neurone Disease along the way.
