Wrap up for Winter

Get Layering For Winter

Whether preparing for skiing the slopes, hiking out on the hills, fishing or simply walking the dog. Layering your clothing correctly will keep you warm in the winter months. Whilst you may have the best rated winter jacket, this layer alone is not enough to keep you warm. The key to keeping warm outside is insulation, by using a 3 layer formula; base layer, insulating layer and outer layer to provide an effective barrier of fabric between you and Mother Nature.

Base Layer

DON’T WEAR COTTON. Your base layer needs to be of wicking fabric, to keep moisture away from the skin and prevent you from getting cold. Icebreaker Merino will do the job nicely; it dries quickly and doesn’t stay wet. Wear top and bottom, well fitted baselayers to ensure overall body heat.

Insulating Layer

Fleece, Icebreaker merino-loftCanada Goose down and Marmot synthetic down provide great insulating properties for a mid layer. The mid layer will receive a lot of the transferred dampness from your moisture-wicking base layer; so again, no cotton, it can fit more loosely than your base layer.

Outerwear Layer

The final layer is the outerwear. Depending on what you are intending to do and the elements you will face, the outerwear can consists of insulated, waterproof jacket and pants or a single windproof jacket. The outerwear layer needs to protect you from rain, snow, sleet, wind, etc.

Wrap up from top to toe

In addition to the three main layers, there are some important accessories to ensure the chill is kept at bay; Wool Socks, Hat, gloves and Neck warmer. Up to 45% of body heat is lost through the head, so pop on a warm hat or beanie. Waterproof gloves ensure that you are kept dry as well as warm. If skiing, snowboarding or mountaineering goggles will improve and protect your vision.

Remember if you wear too much you can always take a layer off, you can put something on you don’t have. Where the right fabric and be prepared with a customised layering system to suit your environment.

Mitre 10 Wanaka Rogaine

Wanaka Rogaine Outside Sports NZ

The Wanaka Rogaine will be held Sunday 26 April 2015. At Snow Park, 2k’s west of Snow Farm up from the Cardrona Valley.

If you enjoy running trails, tramping in the hills and mountains with your friends then the Wanaka Rogaine is for you! Rogaine involves long distance cross-country navigation, the team with the most points awarded wins. In Rogaine, teams consist of generally 2-5 people; teamwork is a vital factor to the sport alongside endurance. Teams will have to strategically plan their route and navigate between checkpoints using a map and given clues within a specified time limit. Some checkpoints are worth more points than others so it is vital that the teams select which checkpoints they will get and which they may leave to finish within their specified time slot, as they will lose points for being late back to the finish. (1 minute late back will deduct 10 points in the Wanaka Rogaine). It is very rare for teams to get all check points in a Rogaine within the specified time slot allocated.

The Mitre 10 Wanaka Rogaine has 3, 6 and 12 hour options, meaning  you have up to exactly 3, 6 or 12 hours to get to and record the codes of as many checkpoints as you can.

Specialized women’s Rumor 650b

It's here..........NEW from Specialized, the women’s Rumor 650b!

To fulfil the Specialized evolving philosophy to offer multiple wheel sizes on their popular mountain bikes, they have looked at the women’s fleet and have introduced the Rumour 650b, a women's-specific trail bike! The Rumor Evo 29 was rated one of the best womens bikes for the Bible of Bike Tests last year. Now it has been tweeked with increased travel and a new wheel size for a snappier geometry, more travel and 27.5-inch wheels.

This is now the 3rd version of the Rumour from Specialized. Evolving from a 110-millimeter 29er to a 120-mil 29er to the new version of 130-millimeter 650b , (Specialized are keeping the 120-mil 29er version in the line-up for next year, although it will slowly phase out the original Rumor 29).

So women keep your eyes peeled and watch this space for the Rumor 650b.

Specs, By: Nicole Formosa

The top-level Rumour Expert comes with a 130-millimeter RockShox Pike fork up front, 125-millimeter Fox CTD rear shock with Autosag, Specialized’s proprietary system to self-regulate rear sag, and a custom tune for lighter riders, Shimano XT brakes, SRAM X01 one-by rear derailleur with a 30-tooth chainring up front, respectable 700-millimeter-wide Specialized alloy handlebars and the Specialized Command micro-adjust dropper post. In my opinion, the best part upgrade from last year is the wheelset. On the new Expert version only, Specialized offers the Roval Traverse aluminum wheels with a 29-millimeter inner width. The wider wheels create a noticeable difference in stability, control and traction while cornering.

With the new 27.5 wheel size, the Rumor’s geometry tightens up as well. The 650b sports shorter chainstays–17 inches compared to 17.7–a shorter toptube, lower standover and a lower bottom bracket. The overall wheelbase stays the same as last year’s 29er.

While Specialized still doesn’t offer the Rumor in a carbon-fiber frame, nor does it offer an all-mountain bike targeted at its female fans, Specialized women’s mountain product manager Amy Nelson hinted that more premium offerings are on the way.

“It’s a very big year for us. It’s just the beginning, we’ll see what is next,” she said.
